Kate Epstein
Kate is a new addition to the My Gym family, but not to Mac & Lynsey’s life (Kate and Mac have been friends since primary school). Kate began working in the fitness industry about 5 years ago, initially as a fitness consultant, before moving into the teaching side of things with group fitness and boxing classes. Kate is qualified as a Gym and Boxing Instructor, and is currently undertaking an honours year at Sydney University, completing a Bachelor of Economics and Social Science.
Kate says: ‘Like Lynsey and Mac, I believe that fitness is an important part of life, but it certainly shouldn’t be your WHOLE life. I was definitely not one of those sporty girls in school… in fact I used to regularly ‘forget’ my PE uniform to avoid class! My personal interest in fitness came when I got a full time job that involved long hours in front of a computer. Despite the fact that I was sitting down all day, I would come home tired and lethargic, and my weight was slowly beginning to creep up. Once I started to exercise regularly, I found not only that my weight came down to a healthier level but I had energy to do other things, rather than simply collapsing in front of the television at the end of the day.
Now that I am studying, regular exercise is just as important. For me, fitness is the thing that keeps everything else ticking over. Not only do I feel physically better but my stress levels and mental state are considerably improved. I still spend lots of hours in front of a computer, reading and writing, so regular training is essential to balance this out and keep me sane.
When I first got started with exercise, motivation was definitely an issue, and I found that classes worked best to keep me going. Even now, I still find that I work a lot harder when I’m training with someone else…. not to mention the fact that it is more fun. For me, this is the best thing about the My Gym – everyone comes along ready to work hard and motivate each other. In my opinion, that’s the best way to train!’
